Composting is the easiest thing in the world and extremely inexpensive.  If you apply compost regularly you can skip those expensive fertilizers. A finished compost is a treasure chest full of nutrients, once you apply regularly you will see your garden flourish as never before.

So how do you start composting? Simple!

1) you will need a cage or some kind of contained area approximately 3′ x 3′ in size

2) place this contained area in the sun and as far away from vegetation and tree roots as possible

3) allow for air and drainage at the bottom of your compost pile by putting broken twigs as a base for your pile

4) for the best nutrient rich compost add green and brown materials such as trimmings, dead plants, grass cuttings, vegetable based kitchen waste, fallen leaves and twigs.

5) This pile will now start to decompose to compost and it may take a while.  If you would like to speed up the process try adding blood meal.  No blood meal? No problem….add a bit of finished compost.  This finished compost has the bacteria and micro-organisms that help a compost pile get started.

6) Make sure to sprinkle water on your pile ( but just sprinkle…try not to make the pile too wet)  Your pile should be moist not wet.

7) Building compost means adding material and water, this will break down and you will end up with nutrient rich compost for your garden.
